Established in 1962 by Julius and Berta Gangl, the Gangl Winery sits on 10 acres of vineyards in Illmitz, a little village between Lake Neusiedl and the Hungarian border about 75 km south of Vienna. The Gangl Winery is situated in the heart of the sweet wine production region of Austria and produces the white wine varieties Traminer, Bouvier, Pinot Blanc, Riesling and Gruner Veltliner, as well as the red wine varieties Zweigelt and St. Laurent. The Pannonic climate translates into dry, warm summers and cold winters with limited snowfall. During the late summer and early autumn, the humidity is high, which allows for a microclimate that enables the spores of the Botrytis to spread for noble rot. The soil in the area is mainly sand, while some parts of Illmitz contain Tschernosem (clay) and Paratschernosem soil (a mixture of clay and argil). The Gangl Winery prides itself on producing high quality wines which are harvested by hand and sorted with care.
