Trentino Alto Adige is the Italian-speaking half of the Trentino Alto-Adige region, in the central Italian Alps. The viticulture of this picturesque and northernmost area of Italy is concentrated in the valley of the Adige river and surrounding hills. Trentino is the land of Speck (peppery smoke-cured pork flank), Canederli (large dumplings served in broth, topped generously with Parmigiano Reggiano), and wild mushrooms (like Chiodini and Porcini). The rich, wintry foods of the region are matched by the seventeen varietals of the Trentino DOC, including reds, whites, and dessert wines. And although the region is primarily known for its extraordinary whites, its reds have been the stars of recent years.
